About the job

 

Job Description:

Laboratory Analyst performs chemical and physical tests on crude oils, process streams, petroleum products, petrochemical products, by products, additives, aqueous samples and Pyrolysis Oil to deliver accurate and reliable PQ test results to customers.

 

He/she also performs sampling (LPG and gas) and troubleshoots problems related to laboratory equipment and test methods. All work performed in compliance with the Bukom Refinery HSSE standards, and Bukom Lab Quality Manual & ISO/IEC 17025.

 

A Laboratory Analyst’s roles and responsibilities include:

  • Register samples promptly.
  • Handle and treat samples carefully and safely according to approved procedures.
  • Blend samples and/or add additives to samples.
  • Perform special analysis at plants during shutdown/start-up.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents from chemicals which may be corrosive or toxic.
  • Prepare calibration/validation standards from pure chemicals which may be toxic.   
  • Perform statistical quality control of laboratory equipment/test methods accurately and according to schedule.
  • Operate laboratory equipment with optimized test and recipe conditions for each sample type and after prior ascertainment that equipment is in optimal condition.
  • Test samples efficiently, accurately and timely according to samples priority and according to his/her competence level.
  • Test samples accurately and correctly according to specified test methods and special instruction (if any) without deviation (unless validated).
  • Work with high productivity.
  • Notify supervisor when obtained abnormal test/validation result is obtained.
  • Report laboratory remarks when sample types, test conditions or test results are not fully within test methods.
  • Mark used samples for retention or for disposal.
  • Record raw data, including sample number and equipment used, to maintain traceability of data.
  • Check finished test results that are correct and accurate and then input these promptly into the laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Perform testing at plant units when requested.
  • Use resources (such as equipment, materials, consumables, spare parts, chemicals, solvents and utilities) efficiently, effectively and carefully.
  • Be conscious of and comply with HSE requirements before any task.
  • Intervene in case of any contravention of HSSE requirements by colleagues or others.
  • Practice good housekeeping of equipment, apparatus and areas used by him/her.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment used by them to the level they are trained.
  • Troubleshoot laboratory equipment to the level they are trained.
  • Keep up with and use up-to-date test methods and operate laboratory equipment with appropriately optimized test and conditions for each sample type.
  • Take cleaning solvents for laboratory use during hours when Lab General Work is not available and help to change gas cylinders.
  • Perform analytical and technological investigations and studies, discuss with supervisor or Lab Technologists and submit reports (including Lab Learning Events Reports).
  • Perform any other task or duty as assigned or instructed by supervisors in a safer manner.

 

Job Requirements:

  • A committed, responsible, passionate, professional individual contributor.
  • At least 2 to 10 years of laboratory working experience as a lab analyst or technologist.
  • Skill in lab Physical properties testing and the related test methods and equipment.
  • Familiar with HSSE compliance, laboratory safety, and chemical handling (MSDS).
  • Experience with product quality management (PQCP, procedures, and controls), statistical analysis, and use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Knowledge of reporting, stock management, and equipment maintenance, repair, or acquisition.
  • Background in training or competency assessments will be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of refinery or chemical process units and product quality is a plus.
